Picking a name for your little one is one of the hardest and most important decisions you will have to make, pre birth. There are so many lovely names to choose from. And yet, somehow, some parents seem to have the ability to get it oh so wrong! Hashtag, Number 16 Bus Shelter, Lucifer and @ just to name a few! Obviously these are extreme examples and what is a ‘normal’ name for me might not be for you so I do try not to judge but when faced with a baby “Audi” I am forced to bite my tongue!
For us, we wanted to choose a name that was cute as a baby (check), cool as a child (check) and sensible enough to survive in the adult world (Check. I think.) – eventually we narrowed it down to ‘Alice’. Alice was, in fact, my grandmothers middle name so it is nice for there to be a namesake also.
If you look back through records, you can see how names seem to be becoming popular again from our grandparents generation (Ida, Stanley, Jack, Ava, James.) I expect this cycle will continue on forever (and no doubt more ridiculous names as parents attempt to outdo each other on ‘originality’)

Choosing a baby name is so difficult! My grandmothers middle name, Beatrice, is a definite contender for our little bun in the oven! I love the older names they always sound so elegant unlike the fad names x

When we chose both our daughter and son’s names they weren’t even in the top 50 but now when you look up their birth year, their names are in the top 10.

I don’t have any kids, but I have an ongoing list of names I would give my children…I have been interested in names since I was little, and consider it one of the most important things you can give your child. It will influence his life from the moment he is born, through school, and all the way to getting a job! So I am definitely starting the research now.
I am definitely one of those people to do things just because they are the exact opposite of what everyone else is doing, so the top baby name list will absolutely influence what I ultimately decide to name my kids. My boyfriend and I have decided to adopt (as well as have children of our own) for many reasons, and I am toying with the idea of naming a child something contradictory to his or her native country. Like naming a child from South Africa Leilani (a Hawaiian name) for instance. I know it sounds crazy, and I don’t know if I’ll actually have the courage to do it once the time comes, but I DO very much like the idea of overturning the stereotypical norms of baby names, and making people do double takes! Besides, I would NEVER want someone to make judgments about my child just by looking at his or her name, which sadly happens all the time: in schools, college applications, job applications, etc.
I also appreciate parents who put a little creativity into their children’s names. Sarah? Michael? Really? Do you WANT your child to blend in and be forgettable? I mean, no offense meant to those who do have uncreative names like that, but you want to give your child every advantage in life. I went to high school with 15 Sarahs and 11 Michaels! Maybe “@” is just cray-cray, but at least it’s memorable!
Ultimately, I think the goal is to find a happy medium between forgettable and absolutely absurd.
